MOOC’s are the future of education. We have to practice Netiquette for them because they are the new format for learning in the Information Age. Costs are significantly reduced for the institution. The participants pay the difference in hard work. Society benefits by peace and prosperity.

M in MOOC stands for massive. The clear meaning is that there are thousands or hundreds of thousands of participants. Participants are the people who sign up. Students are the people that actually acquire skills from the course. Often, no grades or an automated process.
The first O in MOOC stands for open. This refers to enrollment. Open enrollment allows almost anyone to register for this type of class. The underlying meaning is that the participants will have the whole range of qualifications for the course and lack thereof.
The second O in MOOC stands for online. An internet connection is required to access course material. The underlying meaning is that you need a reliable connection. For example, a library may be a more reliable connection than a coffee shop.
The C in MOOC stands for course. Actually this depends on who is defining it. I call them courses because MOOC’s I have taken are college level courses. The word course is used to describe the content and modify massive as large enrollment because college courses are typically larger than high school classes.
MOOC’s are underrated in my opinion because slacker students have been taking them thinking that the online format will allow them to cheat their way through them. Not the case. Online classes are harder than classes in real life in general. MOOC’s are twice as hard as a netiquette rule. Public School MOOC’s are three times as hard.
Public Schools do not provide much support of feedback in general. MOOC’s do not do it by design. There are usually up to 100,000 participants or more. There is no way to give personal feedback. Every student must do what is necessary on their own to score well on an exam. Listening to a lecture is the smallest part of learning in the class.
More often than not, people fail. The class does not fail, the students fail the class.
Private Schools, Colleges, and other institutions offer MOOC’s for various reasons. It attracts interest in the institution. I took a MOOC offered by the Hospitality School at Cornell.
MOOC’s at private schools generally have some review of work by teaching assistants. Writing assignments are given instead of just multiple choice tests as in public school MOOC’s. These type of classes provide access to higher education most participants cannot otherwise afford. It is not just that they are free. The main reason cited for taking online courses is convenience. Working professionals, men and women with families, and the poor can learn something new in this type of course. They are truly for everyone.
