It is proper internet etiquette to spell check and proofread all written communication because errors diminish the credibility of the message.

Have you ever seen a status update or received an email with a misspelled word?
It usually makes you think less of the person who wrote it.
On the internet, grammar and spelling errors are common for many reasons. As internet use increases, so will the number of spelling mistakes and grammar errors. The more you write the more mistakes you make. Making mistakes is natural.
Internet Etiquette
The most common reason for spelling and grammar errors is lack of proofreading. Proofreading a message several times will catch most mistakes. The average internet user knows how to spell and use a spell check and or grammar checking software program to check the contents of a message. When there are errors in a message it is usually because the author did not use a spellcheck program or proofread the message.
Mobile devices make it more difficult to type and proofread messages. It is easy to touch the wrong key on a mobile device because the keyboards are a lot smaller than traditional desktops. Many users were taught to type on desktop computers. As a result, they are not as comfortable typing on mobile devices and make more mistakes.
It takes mental toughness and fortitude to practice good netiquette all the time. Spell checking and proofreading has to be a routine. Own your messages and follow a good netiquette routine.
Spell Check /spel - chek/ Proofreading text for spelling errors. Correcting the spelling of words in a text document. Reading text to determine if there are any misspelled words.
Proofread /Pur-uf R-eed/ Viewing text for spelling and grammar errors. Rereading text for grammar, style, or other editing purposes. Looking at a text documuent to determine if it appears correctly and making appropriate changes.
Spell check programs are only as good as the dictionary it uses to check words. Often times, spell check dictionaries do not have every word. Many cyber-words are not included.
For example, cyber-safety is not in many dictionaries. It is now spelled as one word in some cases, making it harder to define. It is actually a contraction because cyber and safety are two separate words that, when put together in a sentence have a slightly different meaning. Cybersafety means internet safety rather than safety in reality. No one can define this word because I just made it up.This is why netiquette is not strict in most cases.
Spell check programs do not tell you if you used a word in the wrong context. They tell you if a word is spelled correctly. For example, these programs have been known to correct a spelling mistake with a word that does not fit in the sentence.
Proofreading includes checking a message for spelling and other grammar errors. Spell checking is the first step in proofreading a message and can be done with a software program, which is why it is a separate step in the process.
It is good netiquette to look past any grammar errors when communicating on the internet because there are so many different reasons for them. Make a mental note of errors and keep reading. Grammar errors do mean something about the author and spell check programs are not perfect.
Reading a message for clarity and quality before sending it is required for proper netiquette because it is easy to send the wrong message for various reasons. On the internet, leaving a word or comma out of a sentence may send the wrong message. People often speak in text and read messages when they have time to analyze them.
It's easy to skip a word entirely or use the wrong letters without even knowing it when texting from a touch screen. Heat from any source can cause inadvertant touches on touch screen devices. Reading a message in the morning over a cup of coffee after breakfast is a different context than sending one at 3:00 AM when you have been up all day.
It is easy to jump to conclusions with short messages. Short messages do not give a reader a lot of information. Lack of information can make a person jump to conclusions logically and illogically. This is why emotional texting is discouraged, because humans do not always think logically when emotions are involved.
The meaning of a word or the way it is spelled can change an entire message. Giving a message a 'second look,' no matter what type it is, is always a good idea because it can prevent a misunderstanding.
Proofreading a message is a process that is required for every message sent to be considered proper netiquette.
Netiquette
Messages that cannot be understood are not credible. Better spelling, grammar, and punctuation help you communicate with more people because more people can understand you. Therefore, it's good netiquette to use a spell check program because it makes your message easier to read. In addition, reread text before you post or send it on the internet and apply appropriate editing based on the content and context of the message. This is proper netiquette.
Everyone could use a little netiquette!
